Case Study: Improving Comfort and Accessibility Through Inclusive School wear

Understanding the Challenge

At Endeavour Co-operative Academy, student comfort and accessibility are central to everyday learning. However, the school’s traditional uniform — consisting of a blazer and tie — was becoming a challenge for many students.

For children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), restrictive clothing can create discomfort, anxiety, and sensory difficulties. The formal uniform style was not always practical for students who required greater flexibility, softness, and ease of movement throughout the school day.

The school wanted a smarter, more inclusive solution that still maintained a strong sense of identity and pride.

Our Approach

After listening carefully to the concerns raised by the school, we worked collaboratively to design an alternative uniform solution tailored to the needs of their students.

Instead of the traditional blazer and tie, we introduced a smart tracksuit-style top in the school’s colours, professionally branded with the school logo.

The garment was created using a soft, comfortable material designed to feel less restrictive and more suitable for everyday wear. The addition of a full front zip also made the top easier to put on and remove, helping to improve comfort, independence, and practicality for students.

The new design was developed to:

  • Provide greater comfort for students
  • Reduce restriction and sensory discomfort
  • Allow easier movement throughout the day
  • Offer a soft-touch, comfortable fabric suitable for daily wear
  • Improve ease of dressing with a full-zip design
  • Maintain a smart and professional appearance
  • Preserve school identity and consistency

Supporting Inclusive Education Through Uniform Design

This project demonstrates how thoughtful uniform design can make a meaningful difference in education settings, particularly within SEND schools.

At Red Oak School Wear, we believe uniforms should support students — not restrict them. By working closely with schools to understand their challenges, we help create solutions that are functional, inclusive, and fit for everyday learning.
